Newark Orchard School opened in 1996 and is an Area Special School with two sites. The 3-14 Department is on Appleton Gate in the centre of Newark and meets the needs of youngsters in Foundation, Key Stage 1, 2 and 3. The 14-19 Department (Key Stages 4 and 5) is based on the London Road at Balderton.
We are also in the process of creating a third site on London Road which will be where our specialist Autism hub will be based. This new and exciting development will open after Easter 2015. Initially we are planning on offering 10 specialist places for pupils who have an ASD diagnosis and either a statement or Education Health Care plan. Alongside this there will also be the opportunity for Newark schools to work in partnership with our school and the Area Special Needs Coordinator, to access support packages for pupils with Communication & Interaction needs which may require short term placements at the hub.
At our last Ofsted inspection we were judged to be a good school in all areas. It was recognised that the ‘teaching is usually good and sometimes outstanding and teachers have high expectations of pupils' behaviour.' We are particularly proud of our personalisation focus for individual pupils and the considerable improvement in post 16 where Ofsted reported that pupils gain useful qualifications and practise important skills for the future. We are well known as an innovative and forward thinking school.
Individual Growth for Individual People
We are fully committed to ‘Individual Growth for Individual People'. We have a very experienced and skilled staff and we pride ourselves on our abilities to construct Individual Education Programmes and personalise the curriculum to meet the requirements of young people with special educational needs and enable them to access their curriculum entitlement. We are delighted to work with schools across Newark to enhance their special educational needs provision. The school is represented on the steering group for The Together for Newark partnership and as part of this has co-produced a support package for schools around Autism friendly practice. Included in this is training, information and a Kitemark for schools to work towards based on the Autism Education Trust standards recognised by the DFE. We are happy to offer advice and support wherever requested. We work with a whole range of different professionals and enjoy a close partnership with them. We are totally committed to helping to maintain appropriate provision for individual pupils, wherever they go to school.
We welcome visits to Newark Orchard School and would be proud to show you round. If you would like to talk to either the Head Teacher or one of the Deputy Head Teachers, please call to make an appointment.
